Question: What kind of impact can filing a water claim have on home?
Answer:
Water damage caused to your home can cause extensive damage and leave problems, such as mold, for you to deal with for years to come. Having appropriate insurance coverage in place is important to protect yourself from the costs of thoroughly repairing the damage.
However, if the damage is only minor, we advise that you consult with your local Brooke Insurance agent before filing the claim. Sometimes, the damage of having a water claim on your home’s history is not worth the amount you would receive from the claim. For example: In Texas, due to the mold crisis of 2001, a house with a history of a water claim can be a very hard sell. Depending on the size of the water claim, it may be an uninsurable home as well.
The best advice is to try and protect your home from the water damage happening in the first place. Below are some tips to decrease your chances of suffering water damage:
• Replace your washing machine and ice maker lines with the metal braided style lines that are not subject to cracking over time. A typical standard rubber line, especially on the washer where it is exposed to hot water, will burst after a few years
• .Turn off the washer and ice maker supply lines when traveling away from your home. This will only take you a few minutes and can provide ease of mind during your vacation.
• Each Spring, check the drip pan to your air conditioning unit. The drip pan can clog and cause severe water damage.
